Readiness Assessments for PreK through 1st grade

Scholastic Testing Service, Inc. is now it the midst of conducting our pilot on the new Preschool Progress Screening (PPS) for 3 and/or 4 year olds. The PPS was designed to report on developmental milestones, drive classroom instruction, and to preliminarily identify children who may be in need of additional support or services. We are looking to roll out the new PPS in 2019!

In the meantime, we still have the Kindergarten Readiness Test and the School Readiness Test.

The latest editions of the Kindergarten Readiness Test and the School Readiness Test will benefit educators by:

  • providing as much information as possible about each student’s abilities
showing how underlying competencies have developed
  • assessing a student’s Overall Readiness Score as related to a national percentile and stanine
  • tracking individual and group results by providing a Class Record Sheet and Class Summary Report (on paper or digitally)

High School Placement Test (HSPT®)

Who can believe it’s already August and the beginning of the school year is just around the corner. Seniors will be entering their last year of high school and kindergarteners will be entering their first year of elementary school.

STS is set to begin another busy fall getting ready to roll out another testing season of the High School Placement Test (HSPT®). The HSPT is the most comprehensive placement test available to assess 8th graders for entrance into high school. The HSPT provides reliable data that’s needed for admissions, placement, remediation and scholarship decisions. The rigorous content of the HSPT helps prepare students for the demands of a high school curriculum.

The HSPT provides national normative measures in the following cognitive and basic skills areas: verbal and quantitative skills, reading, mathematics and language. Optional tests in science and Catholic religion are available at no additional cost. Testing time for the HSPT is about 2 hours and 30 minutes.

In order for high schools to save time with their many applicants, check out the Online Registration system. This allows families to sign up electronically to take the HSPT while also paying the testing fees online. High schools receive immediate registration confirmation to easily track registrants.

STS can also upload HSPT reports to the Report Center. Schools will no longer wait for the paper reports to arrive and avoid extra shipping costs. All you need to do is download, view and print the reports when needed.

Call STS today at 1.630.766.7150 to inquire about the HSPT and what it can do for you.

Readiness Assessments

As the school year wraps up, there is still plenty of time to administer the Kindergarten Readiness Test (KRT) for those leaving preschool and entering kindergarten next year. The purpose of the KRT is to determine the extent to which each of the underlying competencies in reading, mathematics and language have been developed so that instruction can be modified to meet the needs of each student. The 8 subtests may be given in 45 minutes. Scores and skill ratings for each individual subtest are measured along with an overall readiness score and rating.

For those leaving kindergarten and entering first grade in the fall, the School Readiness Test (SRT) is available for administration. The purpose of the SRT is to allow teachers to learn as much as possible about each entering student’s ability and about any factors that might interfere with his or her learning. The eleven subtests, with an optional handwriting assessment may be given in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Scores and skill ratings for each individual subtest are measured along with an overall readiness score and rating. The overall readiness score is also related to a national percentile and stanine.

Coming Soon is the new Preschool Progress Screening to evaluate your 3 and/or 4 year olds. This quick and easy assessment gives an idea of general education exposure at these young ages. Call us today at 1.800.642.6787 to take part in the pilot testing for Fall 2018 or to get more information.

Torrance Tests of Creative Thinkking

Scholastic Testing Service is the publisher of the highly reliable Torrance® Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT). For many years, the TTCT has supported educators with identification of gifted and talented students and have been used as part of gifted matrices in states and districts in multicultural populations for more than 50 years. The TTCT assesses creative abilities and provides students an opportunity to demonstrate their diverse talents, imagination, and creative potential based upon life experiences. It has also been found to predict children’s creative achievement better than most IQ tests. The TTCT invites examinees to draw and give a title to their drawings (pictures) or to write questions, reasons, consequences and different uses for objects (words). Published in two equivalent forms, Forms A & B, the Figural and Verbal TTCT can be used for pre- and post-testing. The Figural TTCT is also available in Spanish.

The Figural TTCT is appropriate for kindergarten through adult with an administration time of 30 minutes. The Verbal TTCT is appropriate for grade 1 through adult with an administration time of 45 minutes.

Both versions of the TTCT may be scored locally by purchasing the suitable scoring guides and norms-technical manuals. For those who wish to send in the response booklets for scoring, the STS scorers are capable of scoring with a high degree of reliability. Computerized individual and group reporting which includes raw scores and national and local percentiles are part of the scoring service. Request a TTCT Preview Sample.

Helpful HSPT Tips for Parents

The High School Placement Test (HSPT®) is in full swing right now with eighth graders testing to determine student admission, placement and scholarship awards based on HSPT performance. So as a parent, how can you help prepare your child for a successful testing experience?

First make sure the child gets a restful night’s sleep. Also, make sure the child has a healthy breakfast in the morning. This will help the child be more energetic and productive during the 2.5 hours of HSPT test administration.

Before you send your child into the high school for the HSPT, remind them of the following:
1. Read the directions and each question carefully.
2. Pace yourself. Time limits are set for each subtest. The test administrator will      announce the halfway point of each subtest.
3. Answer every question. If you are unsure of an answer, take your best guess. There is no penalty for answering incorrectly.
4. Check your work. If time permits, go back and review your answers.

Now that the HSPT is complete, take your child out for an ice cream sundae. They deserve it!

International Torrance Creativity Awards 2017

cover_torranceAwards2017The International Torrance Creativity Awards 2017 will be coming to an end soon.  Center for Gifted Directior, Joan Smutny has reported “we are beginning to have some very fine submissions …we have four categories:

  • visual arts,
  • music composition,
  • and inventions.
This flyer will give further information: (http://www.centerforgifted.org/torranceAwards2017.pdf). It is an inspiration to see the quality of material that comes in to us. The beauty of material submitted, the strength and quality of the submissions, the originality, creativity, and imagination all point to students of obvious talent who genuinely wish to submit high quality material. We are grateful to have such submissions from students ages 8–18, from the United States and abroad.”
The 2016 International Torrance Legacy Creativity Awards magazine is available for review.  Are your students creative?

The fastest way to place your new students!

Are you looking for a “quick” assessment to check class performance or to help with student placement for grades 2-12? In just 35 minutes or less, the QUIC Tests provide immediate feedback in the areas of mathematics and communicative arts.

QUIC Tests consist of item sets that focus on content uniquely representative of that specific grade level. The test booklets are reusable and a carbonless answer sheet is provided for students to mark their answers. When testing is complete, the teacher simply opens the answer sheet to access the answer key.

Choose your format:

  • Self-Scoring with student response forms
  • Machine-Scorable answer sheets with STS scoring and reporting
  • QUIC Online is the fastest way to assess students and receive reports

QUIC Tests generate a competency-based grade equivalent and a raw score. The raw score can then be converted to a standard score in order to determine if the student is performing at, above, or below grade level.
